High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa lets recent graduates of top-ranked global universities come to the UK without a job offer or sponsor. It is aimed at attracting early-career international talent, giving you the freedom to work for any employer, switch jobs, be self-employed, or look for opportunities while you establish yourself in the UK labour market.

To qualify you must have been awarded an eligible qualification - broadly equivalent to a UK bachelor's, master's or PhD - from a university on the UK's Global Universities List within the last five years, and meet English-language ability at level B1 and a maintenance-funds requirement. There is no minimum salary and no sponsorship, which makes the HPI unusually flexible compared with most UK work routes, but it is a one-off, non-extendable visa.

The defining feature of the HPI visa is the Global Universities List, published by the UK each year. Your university must have appeared in the top tier of recognised international rankings in the year you graduated, so eligibility depends on both which institution you attended and when your degree was awarded. Because the list changes annually, you should check the list for your specific graduation year rather than the current one.

If your qualification was not taught in English, you will usually need Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) confirmation that it is equivalent to the relevant UK level and was from an eligible institution. Confirming your university and award year against the correct year's list before you apply is the most important eligibility check, since applying with an ineligible institution is the most common reason HPI applications fail.

You apply online, providing your passport, evidence of your eligible qualification (and an Ecctis verification where required), proof of English at B1, and evidence of maintenance funds held for the required period. Applicants from outside the UK typically attend a biometrics appointment or use the UK Immigration: ID Check app, depending on nationality and passport type.

Processing usually takes about three weeks when applying from outside the UK and around eight weeks from inside. Because the HPI does not require a sponsor, the application is relatively straightforward, but accuracy on the qualification and the correct year's Global Universities List is critical. Preparing your Ecctis verification early, if needed, is the main step that can otherwise slow down an application.

The visa lasts two years, or three years if your eligible qualification is a PhD or doctoral degree. The application fee is around 822 pounds, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at 1,035 pounds per year, and you must show maintenance funds (broadly around 1,270 pounds held for 28 days) unless exempt. You can work, change jobs, and be self-employed, and you can bring dependent partners and children.

Crucially, the HPI cannot be extended and does not by itself lead to settlement. Like the Graduate route, it is best used as a springboard: while on the HPI visa you can find a sponsoring employer and switch into the Skilled Worker route, which does count toward indefinite leave to remain. Planning that switch before the two or three years expire is essential to keep a continuous path toward settling in the UK.

Make sure your employer's registration and filings are current, that your job title and salary match every supporting document, and that your qualifications clearly map to the role. Most delays come from inconsistent paperwork, a name spelled differently across files, an expired registration, or missing proof of the company's standing. Respond quickly to any request for evidence, keep copies of every submission, and avoid booking flights until the visa is physically issued. If you might change employers later, learn the notification steps in advance so you never work outside the terms of your permit.
