Graduate Route

The UK Graduate route is an unsponsored post-study work visa that lets international graduates stay in the UK to work, look for work, or be self-employed after finishing an eligible course. To qualify in 2026 you must be in the UK on a Student (Tier 4) visa, have studied with a licensed student sponsor, and have successfully completed an eligible UK bachelor's degree, master's degree, or other qualifying qualification. Your education provider must have told the Home Office that you completed your course. The route grants two years of leave for bachelor's and master's graduates and three years for those who complete a PhD or other doctoral qualification. There is no minimum salary, no job-offer requirement and no sponsorship, so you can work in almost any job, switch employers freely, or start a business, making it one of the most flexible post-study options among major destinations.

On the Graduate route you can work full-time in most roles at any skill level, take internships, be self-employed, and travel in and out of the UK. This freedom is why so many graduates use the time to build UK work experience, sit professional exams, or find a Skilled Worker sponsor. You cannot, however, claim most public benefits, work as a professional sportsperson, or extend the Graduate route once it ends.

Crucially, time spent on the Graduate route does not count toward settlement (indefinite leave to remain). It is a temporary bridge, not a path to permanent residence on its own. Dependants who are already in the UK as your partner or child on the Student route can usually apply to stay, but you cannot add new dependants while on this visa, so families should plan timing carefully.

You must apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires, and only after your university or college has confirmed to the Home Office that you have completed your course. The online application asks for your passport, your Biometric Residence Permit or share code, and your Student visa details; you will also verify your identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by giving biometrics at a visa centre. The core costs are the application fee of £880 and the Immigration Health Surcharge at £1,035 per year, so a two-year Graduate visa carries roughly £2,070 in IHS plus the application fee. Decisions usually arrive within about eight weeks. Apply early, because you must hold valid Student leave at the date of application, if your Student visa lapses first, you lose eligibility for the Graduate route entirely.

Because the Graduate route cannot be extended and does not lead to settlement, most holders aim to switch into the Skilled Worker visa before it expires. To do this you need a job offer from a licensed sponsor in an eligible occupation that meets the salary threshold and going rate. Time spent searching on the Graduate route gives you a valuable head start, and you can switch from inside the UK without leaving. For settlement planning, remember that only time on the Skilled Worker route (and certain other routes) counts toward indefinite leave to remain after five years, Graduate-route time does not. The most common successful pattern is Student visa, then Graduate route to gain experience and find a sponsor, then Skilled Worker visa, then ILR. Treat the Graduate years as a window to lock in a sponsored role and your long-term UK future.

Budget a little extra for document translation, certified or notarised copies, any required medical examination, photos to specification, and travel to a consulate or biometrics appointment. These smaller costs add up and are easy to overlook. Start gathering your documents early. Completed an eligible UK degree or qualification with a sponsoring institution while on a Student visa. Allows 2 years of work (3 for PhD) without sponsorship; cannot be extended. Beyond those specifics, almost every applicant needs a passport valid well beyond the intended stay, recent photographs, and proof of funds or income. Where papers are issued in another language, official translations and sometimes an apostille or legalisation are expected, so confirm the exact format before booking your appointment.

Because this is an employer-driven route, the biggest factor in a smooth outcome is a well-prepared sponsor. Make sure your employer's registration and filings are current, that your job title and salary match every supporting document, and that your qualifications clearly map to the role. Most delays come from inconsistent paperwork, a name spelled differently across files, an expired registration, or missing proof of the company's standing. Respond quickly to any request for evidence, keep copies of every submission, and avoid booking flights until the visa is physically issued. If you might change employers later, learn the notification steps in advance so you never work outside the terms of your permit.
