📋 How to Register with a GP

  1. Find a GP surgery near your home (nhs.uk — "Find a GP")
  2. Register in person or online. No appointment needed to register.
  3. Documents: ID (passport), proof of address (bank statement, utility bill). Note: No documents needed for emergency care.
  4. NHS Number: You'll receive one after registration. Used for all NHS services.
  5. Booking Appointments: Call GP surgery, use NHS App, or online booking.
  6. Wait Times: 1-2 weeks for non-urgent. Same-day for urgent. Walk-in centres available.

🚨 Emergency Services

  • 999: Life-threatening emergencies (heart attack, stroke, severe injury, breathing difficulties)
  • 111: Non-emergency medical advice. Available 24/7. Can book out-of-hours GP.
  • A&E (Emergency Room): Open 24/7 at major hospitals. Free for everyone.
  • Walk-in Centres/Minor Injuries: For non-emergency injuries. No appointment needed.
  • Pharmacies: First port of call for minor health issues. Can give advice and sell medicines.

🌍 For International Residents

  • IHS Surcharge: Visa holders pay Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035/year, £776/year for students). This gives full NHS access.
  • Register with GP: You have the right to register with any GP — they cannot refuse based on immigration status
  • EU/EEA Citizens: Post-Brexit, need visa or settled status for NHS access. EHIC still works for visitors.
  • Visitors: A&E is free. Other NHS treatment may be charged at 150% of tariff.
  • Asylum Seekers: Full free NHS access including prescriptions
