Australia's Medicare provides free or subsidised healthcare to all citizens and permanent residents. Funded by a 2% Medicare Levy on taxable income.

✅ Covered (Free/Subsidised)

• GP visits (bulk-billed = free)
• Public hospital treatment (free)
• Specialist visits (rebate)
• X-rays, pathology, blood tests (bulk-billed)
• PBS prescription drugs (AUD $31.60 max)

❌ NOT Covered

• Dental (except children under 17)
• Physiotherapy, chiro, osteopathy
• Glasses, contact lenses
• Ambulance (some states. Get cover!)
• Cosmetic surgery
• Private hospital rooms

• Medicare Levy Surcharge if income >$93,000 and no private

🎓 For International Students

  • OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover): Mandatory for all student visa holders
  • Cost: AUD $400-$700/year (Medibank, Bupa, Allianz, nib)
  • Covers: GP visits, hospital, ambulance, prescriptions (with limits)
  • NOT Medicare eligible — but reciprocal agreements with UK, NZ, Sweden, etc.
