Cyclone Biparjoy has hit Gujarat, the extent of its damage

Cyclone Biparjoy, a very severe cyclonic storm, made landfall in Gujarat on June 15, 2023, as a powerful storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph. The storm has caused extensive damage in Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts.

As of June 16, 2023, at least 10 people have been killed and over 100 injured in the cyclone-related incidents. Thousands of houses have been damaged or destroyed, and crops have been destroyed in large areas. Power and communication lines have been disrupted in many areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the cyclone will weaken into a cyclonic storm by June 17, 2023. However, it is likely to continue to bring heavy rains to Gujarat and Maharashtra for the next few days.

The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea. It has also advised people living in coastal areas to be vigilant and take all necessary precautions.
